Ascent Trip Report

The name of the city of 'Pyatigorsk' means 'five mountains' and I assume Mashuk is counted as one of them. On a clear day one can see Elbrus and the Caucasus from the top of this most central of the city's peaks, however it was not to be on the day I ascended because of a layer of fairly low cloud. Fortunately, early the following morning I was rewarded with a sensational view of Elbrus and the outline of the other snow-covered mountains from the top floor of my nearby hotel in compensation.

Up by cable car at a cost of 200 Rubles one way for great views over Pyatigorsk. Stood on the highest publicly accessible land just outside the telecommunications compound, but it seemed as high as anywhere within the compound. Descended on foot by the long but pleasantly tree-covered service road back to town. Stopped for a welcome drink in the café a quarter of the way down with its views west over the other laccoliths in the vicinity.
