Ascent Trip ReportWe had started this 12 mile circuit at 8:00 AM and we were down and at the car by 5:30 PM so it was a long day. This was our favorite peak of the 4 that we explored. The view of it from West Peak begged us to wander on further east and bag it before coming down the Warden's Trail. The West side of this peak is very attractive with the rock and alpine vegetation. The hike up from the saddle, like the western ascent of West Peak is large rock which would be a challenge with a heavy backpack but is a fun rock to rock scamper that really does not require scrambling (although Karen did a lot of crab walking as her legs were getting spent).
Excellent views at the top of this peak of Flagstaff Lake, the Stratton Brook Pond where we left earlier that morning, the Little Bigalows, and the Sugarloaf Ski area. The rocky foundation of the peak is a great place for a final photo or two then back down the modest scamper to the saddle to grab the Warden's Trail down. Now this part of the hike is a bit demoralizing. The next 4 miles down stars with one of the longest stretch of stone steps I have ever seen constructed. It becomes monotonous as you descend over 1,500 feet in a little over a mile over stone steps. We were down after 12 miles and then forded the outfall creek from Statton Pond this time keeping our boots mostly dry and then walked the rest of the way back to our car.
We had an amazing dinner at a fine restaurant next to our Motel (the Stillwell??? Motel). We highly recommend the food at the Coplin Restaurant. The best food in the area but only open Wed through weekend.
