Ascent Trip Report

The State Highpointers convention scheduled a large day hike county highpoint bagging trip to go up and tag Old Black and Mount Guyot on the AT at what was billed as a 17 mile day and around 4,570 feet of gain day. I did not use my GPS to confirm distances, but using the signed distances and scaling on the USGS map, I figured I got in a 15.3 mile and 4,591 feet gain day and that included the hike up from the parking lot at Cosby Camp and tagging this small peakbaggers peak on the way up and back. The sign at the Cosby Campground signed gate road gave 4.6 miles and 5.3 miles to Maddron Bald and the AT respectively. I used these markers and scaling off the USGS to estimate our trip and my side trips along the way. Full report of Old Black and Guyot are at those peaks.

I ended up hiking up this small peak twice that day. Once because I have trouble sitting and the others in the group were eating and I found the small undeveloped trail to grab the point; and second time at the end of the day, because one of our teammates (Ken Oeser) explained that there was scattered plane wreckage all over the area. Indeed, most of the wreckage was found along the knob as well as some very large parts in the creek bed below. There were two routes up this small knob - both found no more than a 0.1 mile past the junction with the AT and Snake Den Ridge Trail. The first is steepest and at the plane crash site where wreckage is in the creek below. The path is obvious steep and to the right of a large rock. The second is further upslope on the AT and on the right where an obvious opening in the woods is seen and once you go in you will see yellow plastic electrical wire holders nailed into the trees and then head upslope on the herd trail. Wreckage is everywhere.

I continue the statistics to the top of Old Black from the down trail of this small side venture.
