Ascent Trip Report

My Thursday hiking club went up the Salto Trail. It ascends through a narrow canyon with many stream crossings, slowly at first only about 400 feet a mile elevation gain for the first two miles, slightly steeper after that. Three of us made it to a meadow at just over 10,500 where we had lunch. My two friends went down, but I decided to try for peak 11912. I followed the trail up to about 10800, maybe a third of a mile beyond the meadow, and then headed towards the peak on a GPS compass heading. In about a hundred yards I hit a steep forested slope, probably about a 35% grade. It tired me out quickly. I found myself stopping to catch my breath every hundred paces or so. I was running low on water and storm clouds seemed to be moving in. Reluctantly I headed down.

On the way down I discovered my friend Rich Lubin had re-injured a leg, and was making his way down quite slowly. I kept him company the last two miles to make sure he made it down safely.
