Ascent Trip ReportTrip report for summating San Juan Hill and Gilman Peak in the same outing. 9 miles Round Trip.
TH: Rimcrest Trail Head @ Blue Gum Dr, Yorba Linda, CA. On the bend. Street Parking. There are big red signs that say "No Trespassing/Private Property" But ignore them. They belong to an angry land owner who isn't having luck trading his land for state land (Being serious, I got some local insight.)
Go through a gate and take a right to follow the South Ridge Trail all the way to San Juan Hill There is a sign pointing in the proper direction.
After .91 miles you'll pass the intersection for Little Canyon Trail, remember this if you plan on also bagging Gilman Peak today.
At 1.37 miles the Rim trail will come in on your right. Continue straight.
At 1.9 miles there is a summit of an un named peak that you can follow a unmaintained path to the summit of. There is a bench marker in the ground. Its got some nice views but much of the same as everything else. If you chose to do this, double back the way you came.
Soon after the Gas County Rd will come in on your right. Stay left to continue to San Juan Hill
3.21 miles you'll reach a junction with a sign pointing up to the summit of San Jaun Hill. Go right here.
3.3 miles you'll reach the summit of San Juan Hill. There is an obelisk with the peaks name in it and quiet a few bench marks, for what I would guess as being so close to a county boarder.
If this peak was the only one you planned on doing today, the easiest way is to retrace your steps to the TH. If you want to change the scenery or add Gilman Peak continue back on the South Ridge Trail till you meet up with the Little Canyon Trail. Go right here.
At 5,5 miles you'll be at the junction of Little Canyon Trail and Telegraph Canyon Trail. Go left here.
At 5.77 miles you'll be at the junction of Gilman Trail. If you wish to summit Gilman Peak go right here and follow the trail all the way up. If Not skip the next paragraph.
At 6.9 miles you'll have summated Gilman Peak. There is a wooden post with the peak's name a a bench mark on top of a cement cylinder.
Decent the same way you came up and take a right on Telegraph Canyon Trail. For the first time in this hike there will be trees and plants that are over 5 ft tall!
At 8.6 miles you'll reach the junction to Street Easy Trail. Go left here and it'll take you back to the Trail head for a nice loop!
Total milage 9.06 miles (including 2 detours for view on route to San Juan Hill.
