|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||9706 ft / 2958 m|
Ascent Trip ReportMade the climb starting at the radar tower gate. The summit took me almost exactly 2 hours while the descent took about 2 1/2 hours (I had my 17 month old in the backpack. With the extra weight it was pretty grueling getting back down to the car).
The first third or so of the 4 mile hike ascent travels along on ATV trail. If you were to have a 4WD vehicle, you could easily go past the radar tower gate and continue up the road up to the point where the Great Western Trail begins. I don't have a 4WD vehicle so I started at the gate and just waved at all the passing ATVs.
The Great Western Trail was is in moderate condition - overgrown in some places. The trail traversed along a few other peaks and then puts you near the base of the south ridge of Thurston. At this point you break away from the trail to find an ummaintained trail leading up the south ridge directly to the summit.
