Ascent Trip ReportMitchell is the last peak of a three week 24 ultra trip, and my penultimate ultra in the USA Lower 48 States, leaving me with just Mt Washington to complete.
The previous day Alan Bernier and I had climbed Lassen Peak and Shaffer Mountain. I've arranged to travel home via CLT Charlotte airport and from there it's a simple drive of a couple of hours each way. Then a 5 minute walk at most.
Having learned it's an easy peaks and done no research I'm quite surprised by the elaborate structure which gives a view over the trees. It's centred on N35.76498 W82.26513 (2037m). I find no USGS trig or benchmark: there's a nice nameplate on the floor which is the right size and shape but apparently not USGS property. There's a survey bolt on an outcrop at N35.76507 W82.26525: history/source unknown.
Keen on some exercise before getting back in the rental car, I jog the trail north for a couple of miles. I visit Craig Mountain (N35.77752 W82.26202, 2025m, trig plaque) and Big Tom (N35.77990 W82.25985, 2002m, USGS trig plus smaller one from a survey company). My turnaround point is Balsam Cone: I visit four points of which the southernmost (N35.78941 W82.25589, 2008m, trees) seems higher but the GPS reads higher at N35.78991 W82.25600 (not great accuracy due to tree cover).
It's a nice trail with moss and a few plants including wood sorrel and great yellow gentian, both familiar from Europe and befitting a homeward theme.
