Ascent Trip ReportWe had a lovely climb of this locally prominent peak, which has nice hiking and scrambling. The only issue was the fact that we arrived on the summit when it was in the clouds, which we could have avoided by climbing earlier or later. Since I am the "peakbagger first ascentionist" of this peak, I will give the following route description. The route is as such. To get to the trailhead, take the turn from E10 signed to Unstad and Tangstad. After 4km or so, there is a turn signed to Tangstad. Do not take this turn, but instead continue on the main road through a tunnel (surprise!) into the next valley. After exiting the tunnel, the trailhead is on the 2nd (if I remember) right turn. The actual trail is hard to find, and it is well-defined up to Skrådalsvatnet. Upon reaching the dam, you have two choices. The first is to continue on the trail, which keeps going around the lake. Then, on the other side of the lake, start up the main stream coming into the lake on a small sheep path and when the mini-gorge of this stream ends, cross the stream and head up steep and rather unpleasant heather up to ~400 meters of elevation. Then traverse right towards two small lakes. Then, just head straight up toward the obvious summit. This will involve some scrambling, but there are ways around anything that's unreasonably steep or difficult. This is the faster route, but is not as fun as the second route option. The second option is to go from the dam at the near end of Skrådalsvatnet on a higher sheep path. When this peters out, make an upward traverse onto the SE ridge of the peak, on which you can continue all the way to the summit. This has a path going up it (though it is often ill-defined and at one point goes through a very thin cleft between two rocks) and it's probably less technically difficult than the first route option. You can go all the way on the ridge crest but if at any time this seems uncomfortable, it is easy to drop down and regain the ridge later. The ridge route is a bit long, but is quite interesting and fun. |
