Ascent Trip Report

On the morning of July 4th, 2014 I started up the Calamity Brook Trail at 6:13am. I past a couple groups of hikers going to Redfield and Cliff on my way. I arrived at the Calamity Brook lean-tos 1 & 2 at 7:56am. I continued on the Colden Dam arriving at 8:27am. It started raining on my at Colden Dam and the rain continued for about an hour. I crossed the dam and followed the Up-Hill Lean-to arriving at 9:19am. I went up Redfield first arriving on the peak at 10:35am. When I got on top I had no views due to the fog. It was totally white. I ate lunch and rested 25 minutes. It was starting to clear up when I left so I snapped a couple pictures and when down to where the Cliff trail starts. I past the same two guys and the same couple on the way down that I passed on Calamity Brook trail earlier in the morning.
I arrived at the cairn marking the Cliff Mountain Trail at 12:00 noon. The cairn is marked with a old broken cast iron pan and fire box. The first .25 miles of the Cliff trail are a total mud bog. You have to be very careful where you step as my hiking stick sank in the mud three feet. There are a couple of steep cliff areas going up Cliff, but overall it is not that bad. On top you feel like you reached the peak and the trail keeps going. You have to continue hiking till you go down about 150-200 feet and then back up to the real peak. I arrived at 12:51pm and ate another sandwich. Most of the fog was gone and I had some good views to the north. I rested some and then made my way back down passing the two guy hikers on my way. They were already on top of cliff, but needed to hike along the top to the peak. I made it to the Marshall trail head at 1:54pm and then continued on back to the Upper Works Parking lot at 5:09pm. When I got to Colden Dam the skys had totally cleared up and it was a beautiful day.
