Ascent Trip Report(see 2013 TR for a more detailed route description).
After our Mount Eddy climb we sleep near Bunny Flats trailhead and are away in the morning before 6. We stop at the hut at Horse Camp and fill water bottles from the spring. The snow in the couloir extends pretty far down to Helen Lake and is nice and firm in the morning so we crampon up, taking the R fork which leads to a steep narrow gully xxxx, a little icy in one spot and the crux of the route, needing some care. After what seems like a long climb we top out on the ridge at 4040m, remove crampons and complete the hike to the summit. I'm there in about 5h10 from the trailhead, Alan's just under 5h.
It's a beautiful day up here, and busy, being Independence weekend. We stay for 30 mins then head down. The crux gully is tricky in one spot. Then we glissade / plunge-step down to just above the little lake, remove crampons and hike down. The various trails don't seem to hang together very well and there's a little cross country work to pick up the main trail. We refill water bottles at the hut (spring); we're back at the trailhead in 7h52.
After a meal in Shasta City we drive down to Lassen, our next peak and my final Western US ultra.
