Ascent Trip ReportI drove in from Bridgeport - Aurora Canyon Road(168) to Bodie-Masonic Road (169) where I turned right and headed toward Bodie. Along the way to Bodie, I came across a road that looked like it would take me almost to the summit of Potato Peak; so I turned onto it and drove past some cattle, across a steam, and down a high clearance road until I was 3/4 miles from the summit at about 9,500' (Don't take this road without a high clearance vehicle). The road continued on up the hill, but I didn't want to make the hike any shorter than it was already going to be. The hike was 1.5 miles round trip with 750' gain.
After the hike, I continued on the Bodie-Masonic Road into Bodie and then out via 270. Both the Aurora Canyon Road and the Bodie Masonic Roads are very good graded dirt roads. I didn't have to wait in line or pay at the entrance booth to Bodie by going in via Aurora Canyon Road.
