Ascent Trip ReportComplete snow climb, including a long way up the road. I came in from the Avery side. I would recommend waiting until late July or early August for this one. I am always surprised with the large snowpack in the Larkins, even at the low elevations. There is remnants of an old rock lookout on the top. Good views on this clear 4th of July. My route: - From Avery,ID head west and then south across the old bridge over the river following signs to Fishhook Creek. Just past the school, campground, and edge of pavement head south on Fishhook Creek road #301. Stay on the main 301, avoiding roads to the left, including road #201 and Camp 44. At Breezy saddle, stay left on road #1268 towards trail #50. Just past the turnoff to trail #50 on the main road you will cross the bridge over the Little North fork Clearwater River. Continue on this road up to the signed junction of road #363 which is Buzzard Roost Road. A left (Southeast) will take you up to Buzzards Roost, and Stubtoe peak. Take a right here up a narrow road requiring high clearance. Follow this road up to the crest of the road, and follow Ken Jone's directions from here, following the 4 wheeler track up the hill. It was completely covered in snow when I was there, so I cannot give any details of the trail or trailhead, but it appears to have some kind of a clearing or camp at the trailhead. The final 100' of my climb or so was clear of snow. Register on the top with few names. |
