Ascent Trip Report

An easy but quite long dirt road drive-up P4k; could be muddy if wet. Thanks to Laura Newman for the suggestion and hospitality the previous evening. The second drive-up of the day, after Elko Mountain.

From I-80 jct 231, get onto highway 305 southwest, cross the I-80 then turn L onto Martin Ranch Road. This turns into dirt in a few miles but is still a 40mph+ road. Keep R past the ranch (N40.50353 W116.91874); keep L at N40.44455 W116.96896. This road then continues to the summit area, nice smooth dirt surface all the way, potentially muddy if wet and there may be a few small loose rocks fallen onto the road. The ascent route runs through nice mountain scenery. The main road finishes at some domes (?radar) on a subsidiary summit: for the highpoint turn R just before the domes. This road is rougher gravel but OK in a standard car with care; alternatively one could park and walk the last half mile. Parking our Corolla just below the summit we hike up a few yards then a 5m scramble (easy YDS3 in flip flops) up beside an even easier metal flight of steps leads to a small levelish stony summit with a small comms related structure. There are no fences or access issues. The highest point is a small rock outcrop (N40.40340 W116.86146, 2943m) topped with cement: the trig or benchmark could have been here or may have been lost to the comms installation: exact location not entirely clear from the two USGS reference markers we find. Another survey-related highlight is what appears to be an Active Station: part of the GPS network: a hemispherical Trimble device on a tripod just above the parking area. These are common in the UK but it's the first Trimble I've seen.

The summit register contains few names, mostly familiar to us. The typography up here is very good, quite rugged: surprisingly so for a drive-up.

We head down, grab some food in Battle Mountain and finish our journey to Star Peak.
