Ascent Trip Report

Used my GPS correctly this time. Instead of parking boat at one of the state camp sites and having a miserable bushwhack, I made the easiest line to the top. Grandpa and Karen and Willie in the boat dropped me off in the small cove on the east side of the Island where there are some 5 foot to 15 foot cliffs and rocks and the water was easily 8 feet deep at the shore for the boat for an easy step off.

I set off here as I had a straight westerly approach to the HP. This island should be called biting fly island. Unlike any of the other islands I have bushwhacked on Moosehead Lake, this one always is a swarm with black flies, mosquitoes, horse flies, moose flies, and deer flies. Fortunately, it is a quick bushwhack from this spot and my GPS worked nicely. There is a marshy ravine that runs east out from the island and was muddy and swarmed with mosquitoes so I hiked up the south side and found higher ground, tied some tape and headed up the 0.3 miles to the very unexciting highpoint. Kineo is by far the best hike around. The views are amazing. Moose island bushwhack was OK. Sugar island was OK also. Farm island was the least exciting of all. I still have Deer Island to do some time.

Diving off the rocks at the shore, I soothed my deer fly bites with a delightful swim back to the boat and then had a wonderful cruise at sunset with the family. The sunset on Moosehead Lake is always a spectacular showing of orange and blue hues and I never tire of watching it!
