Ascent Trip ReportWe visited Lemmon late evening, having summitted Chiricahua Peak and Miller Peak earlier in the day. We enjoyed the superbly scenic drive up (oddly shaped tors/pinnacles known as hoodoos).
It's almost dark as we arrive at the upper parking lot and we quickly walk the short stretch of road beyond the barrier. The observatory gates are locked so we head right, find the gap and head for the obvious highpoint. The exact highpoint turns out not to be obvious: we note a rock outcrop with a tiny cairn xxxx, also a mound xxxx; the roadway itself is almost as high. The place seems deserted: no lights on although several parked vehicles.
We summitted at 8.10, just 23h 40mins after we'd summitted Mount Graham the previous evening, giving us the four southern Arizona ultras inside 24hrs.
We overnight with a friend of Alan's just south of Tucson before heading to California the next day, planning a late pm ascent of San Jacinto Peak. |
