Ascent Trip ReportAfter our morning ascent of Chiricahua Peak we head across to Miller. The June weather looks settled enough for an afternoon ascent so we park at the Lutz Canyon trailhead (N31.37895 W110.26314, 1784m), using Petter Bjorstad's trip report.
We start hiking at about 1pm, quite warm but not too hot thanks to some cloud cover. The trail is pretty obvious throughout. It crosses two dry stream beds early on then makes a few switchbacks keeping above the left bank of the creek. It contours back to the main creek bed then, passing some old machinery, it zigzags up a steep tongue between gullies, to reach the entrance to an old mine adit/tunnel (N31.38721 W110.29016, 2430m). The tunnel is strewn with clothing and other items presumably left by people crossing the border on foot from Mexico.
From the adit the trail climbs left (west) to join the Crest Trail at N31.38449 W110.29483 (2625m). We turn right (north) following the trail to a fork (N31.39149 W110.29595, 2781m) where we turn right and follow a side trail to the summit.
Miller summit has a rock outcrop (N31.39286 W110.29296, 2884m) at the highest point, 3m north of the cairn. There are a few points slightly lower, also the remains of some kind of structure.
We enjoy the views for a while then head back down, jogging a fair bit of the way, stopping off to look at some old mining machinery at N31.38491 W110.28720. The lower section is hot, as the clouds have cleared.
Our ascent takes 2h20, the descent 1h17, the round trip 3h53.
We notice we just about have time to summit Mount Lemmon this evening and that this will give us the four southern AZ ultras inside 24hrs, so we head north.
