Ascent Trip ReportThis is my TR (Tick Report) or Trip Report - u decide. On way to Maine and stopped to stretch legs in NC so explore another state park and HP. Was excited to find a "mountain" in the coastal plains of NC this was not the traditional Piedmont area and long from the mountain zone. We read that this chunk of rock was the reminant of very archaic mountain range and was very old.
The "mountain" however was a flat trail along a muddy river called the Bear Swamp Creek and there were ticks everywhere on this day. The sign to the trail head warned of two different species and how to identify them. We hiked along the creek from the Stream Loop Trail to the Discovery Trail hoping to find a bridge. The maps I found on the internet show a parking area and trail access on the east side of the creek to Medoc summit but the rangers told me that was now closed and you have to reach it from the west. Finally, we found the bridge accross the muddy creek and well signed to the summit and dam loops trails. Not very steep. You decline from the parking lot from around elevation 200 and cross the creek at around 140. Then climb to the summit at around 320 feet so not a very tough outing.
Coming back we noticed ticks on us everywhere! We made sure we did touch any vegetation but they found us anyway. They were on the rocks and on the ground. Tiny buggers. We picked 3 off the dog; 3 off me; 4 off Daniel;3 off Sarah but somehow my wife had none! Can't say this one was other than a nice walk in the woods but had to score this State Park HP only a 2 for a hike. Perhaps at another time of year when the ticks are not in full force. |
