Ascent Trip Report

Monte Bondone (Cornetto): 2180m, P1685m

Map: Kompass 1:50k map 70 (100m contours).

Stats: 8km; 770mH

Time: Tue 2 Sept 2008.

Start: Viote: large parking area amidst grassy slopes.

Route: From car park, a waymarked trail crosses grass, skirts an area of damp marshy grassland, pasture (the trail was vague for a while due to temporary fencing) then ascends the gentle N ridge of Cornetto. After following a fairly narrow ridge, the trail approaches the N face of the summit, skirting R, then ascending maybe 30m of loose rubbly slopes to the highest point.

Descending with care, retrace a few 100m of trail, pass below the northern cliffs again, then head NE. Crossing a well defined saddle, see the middle peak Dosso d'Abramo straight ahead, rocky and forbidding. The main trail descends to skirt the peak, but the trail leads into a rocky gully at its W corner, with a via ferrata section (cables and metal footholds) giving access to the summit area. A trail continues NE, through scrub, to a large metal cross perched over a vertical drop. Retrace steps SW for a few metres then descend SE, down a vertical gully, again equipped with cables.

At foot of gully, turn L and skirt round base of cliffs, continuing N to regain the main trail, which crosses a saddle and leads NE towards the third summit: Cima Verde. A sign proclaims the summit (which it clearly isn't: the summit is a couple of minutes further uphill). From the sign, a good trail (labelled 636 on the map) descends the N ridge, partly wooded. We found the rocks in some sections very slippery following overnight rain. Further down, a trail fork is reached: fork L (N) and cross pleasant limestone grassland to regain the outward trail, just before the marshy area near the car park.

Difficulties: Cornetto: last few metres of summit climb are loose: care needed on descent (YDS 2+).
Dosso d'Abramo, crossed on the full traverse, involves via ferrata (fairly easy, YDS 3)

Triangulation point: A Bolt, badly mangled, at Cornetto summit, is (or was) presumably a trig.

Summit: Cornetto: compact grassy with rickety cross planted in a cairn.

Notes: Following yesterday afternoon's Becco di Filadonna climb, we drove through Trento and followed the steep winding road up to a trailhead (small secluded car park) where we spent the night. In the daylight, we tried to orientate ourselves. From the road, the three summits were clearly visible although the road layout didn't seem to entirely fit the map. We parked in a big parking area, found a trail and (06:10) headed for the summit. In good visibility the objective is obvious, and visible all the way. By 07:40 we were on the compact rocky summit of the Ultra.

Intent on traversing the "Tre Cime", we retraced our steps a short way then headed for the imposing W face of Dosso d'Abramo. The via ferrata was found as expected, and we were soon at the grassy summit (08:20). We followed a trail through scrub, to reach the NE summit (08:30, imposing metal cross). Initially we could see no way off, but retracing our steps a short way we soon found the descent: vertical but excellent rock and well protected (cables).

Skirting round the base of the NE face, we regained the easy main trail and climbed grassy slopes to a sign which claimed (prematurely) the summit of Cima Verde. We continued uphill to where the grassy slopes gave way abruptly to limestone cliffs: an impressive place, even though we were now in cloud. Returning to the sign, we had some food then descended down the trail, through trees, at times struggling to stay upright on the stony path made slippery by overnight rain. At the edge of the pasture we reached a trail fork. The orientation didn't bear much resemblance to the map but we branched L (NNW) and in a few minutes recognised the early part of our outward trail, and were soon back at the car (10:10).

Time now to head north to Austria: our next Ultra, tomorrow, being Birkkarspitze. Late afternoon, we find time for a quick(ish) P600m summit on the German border: Gross Arnspitze
