Ascent Trip Report

Part of a 3 day/2 night backpacking tour of Rum including a traverse of the Cuillin from Harris to Kinloch with my 11 year-old son.

Progress on the ridge slower than anticipated: delayed decampment owing to heavy overnight rain; extending the walk from Ruinsival rather than starting at Sgurr nan Gillean; route finding problems with the need to retrace our steps on a couple of the steeper more challenging sections (should have brought a better route description); and rather over-laden rucksacks. Nevertheless an epic trip with a night on the Bealach an Oir, great scrambling, awesome views and a life-enhancing experience for both older and younger members of the party.

Rum is just so beautiful and unspoiled (it is a National Nature Reserve after all) with an abundance of floral and faunal delights (particularly the red deer and Manx shearwaters) and a great location in the midst of the Small Isles with extensive views of mountains and sea in all directions. Just remember to bring a midge net!
