Ascent Trip Report

After Mt Wow, I decided to grab another peak to save another trip through South Hell at some point in my future to bag these Lewis County dumpsters. I followed Forest Road 74 to Forest Road 096. Unfortunately NF-096 was blocked by a downed tree a mile or two after the junction with NF-74. I doubled back to NF-74, then took NF-70 to NF-7312. NF-7312 was blocked by snow where my GPS track starts, not far from Elbert. Unfortunately all of this driving on crappy roads took quite some time and I started out later than I hoped. I also had no beta on these peaks except GPS waypoints for the 2 summits. Elbert was a nasty bushwhack using the route I took on the ascent. It was much easier on my descent route. I then followed the roads to The Rockies. I would have preferred to drive as the sun was setting, but my car was not going to make it through the 30 foot section of snow. The road was otherwise snow free all the way to its end on the way up the second peak. Both peaks had shockingly good views of Mt Rainier, which was thoroughly unexpected for Lewis County logging country. I topped out on The Rockies with just enough light left for a summit photo. I ended up using my headlamp on the descent through the forest but did not need it on the roads once I reached them. The drive out took a full hour, ugh... I guess my plan for a second peak worked out but took me a lot of time, 5 hours pavement-to-pavement.
