Ascent Trip Report

7:30pm - left TH
8:10 - Summated
8:30 - left summit
9:10 - reached TH

Second hike of the day with Jess Huber. Did this hike for sunset.

This hike does require some reading up on.
If you take the fire tower road you should be fine.

TH: is a snow plow turn around on Wells Road in South Corinth

If you take The Saratoga P.L.A.N. trail you will take a left within 2-3 minutes of leaving the snowplow turn around area. There was a orange flagging on a tree when I did this that heads nearly due north. Don't follow the property line painted markings on the trees. The trail cuts back and up. Eventually you'll get to a sign that says private property and the trail continues straight through it. Take this, not the herd-path that will be on right. After you get through the private property, you will begin noticing cairns (rock piles) and a few spread out The Saratoga P.L.A.N. white square trail markers. following these will lead you to the summit which is to your right when you see the tower. The closed tower is not at the highest point. Be careful not to take ATV trails.

The fire tower is closed and there isn't much in the way of views but there is a small "sunset rock" facing directly west that you can stand on and get a relatively good view through the trees if you go past the tower and off the trail. The summit is littered with bottles, cans and other various garbage.

If you plan on coming back the same way, be sure you have daylight or at least headlamps. There are no trail markers facing the opposite direction and parts of the trail can be a little hard to follow coming up become much less obvious. At one of the least obvious parts coming up my girlfriend and I got off the trail accidently. Despite me being very confident with bushwhacks, and hiking in the dark, my girlfriend was getting scared. Using my compass, we headed on a baring that would have brought us very close to the cars, but her being scared, I set the phone to flashlight and the GPS of the phone to show our location so she could see where we were. We then headed south west to intersect the fire tower road to make it easier to hike in the dark and to make her feel more comfortable. If you get lost coming down, I recommend this. One on the road it was a easy hike back.
