Ascent Trip ReportI used the description found in Jones' Peakbagging Montana book. It seems like most people hit this summit using the road on the south side, but this north/northeast approach was interesting. I parked near the fork in the Highwood Creek Road and hiked up the road, fording twice, to the Deer Creek trailhead. Here I forded Highwood Creek for a third time and went up the trail, which was pretty nice. That trail petered out below spot elevation 6044, so I made my way south up the meadowy ridge using game trails. A section of snow-filled woods separated me from the summit, so I made my way thickly through that and then postholed in a talus field for a while until reaching the top. I returned the same way, except near the bottom of Deer Ck Tr I followed a fence line over a hill to avoid two of the fords, popping out below the second one. I'd recommend this.
Unlike beautiful Bearpaw Baldy, which I'd climbed that morning, this peak didn't have much merit. I couldn't picture a non-peakbagger climbing this for recreation, though the lower section of the hike was pretty cool.
