Ascent Trip Report

We left Vegas at 4:30pm and made it to the Oak Grove Campground with some daylight to spare. The campground had just opened the previous day so we were happy to find a campsite. The next morning we started up the trail for Signal and quickly made a big mistake. 500ft from the trailhead the trail splits, and we went left without much thought. We soon realized we weren't on the correct trail but we decided to go a bit further to see if the trail rejoined or if we could easily cut over. We ended up with an intense bushwhack for a quarter mile that wasted 30 minutes and a lot of our energy. When we finally found the correct trail it was easy to follow up to the crest of the mountains.

Once on the crest, the hike got interesting as all of the north-facing slopes were covered with 2-4 feet of soft snow. The trail was nonexistent so we continued heading west on the path of least resistance. We were constantly post-holing into knee or waist deep snow for the last 1.5 miles up to the summit. Had we not worn our boots and gaiters there is no way we would have made the summit. When we finally did reach the top, we signed the register (first in 2014) and rested for a few minutes enjoying the perfect temperature.

On the descent we filled our water bottles from Further Water Spring and retraced much of our steps back up to the crest of the mountains. From there it was a quick hike back to the trailhead. Overall it was an awesome day but the snow and the altitude made it tougher than it should have been.
