Ascent Trip ReportAfter living in Berkeley for over 50 years and having hiked often in the GGNRA and Marin Headlands, it wasn't until today that I finally bagged Hawk Hill. It affords great views of San Francisco, the Golden Gate, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Headlands. It is accessed off U. S 101 at the north end of the G.G. Bridge via the first exit at Alexander Avenue, then soon taking a right turn on Conzelman Road. After approx 1.75 miles there is roadside parking for Hawk Hill, just before Conzelman heads steeply one-way downhill. A short, moderately steep walk on the old gated road leads in 1/4+ mile to the top of the outlook. After several very hot, sunny, clear days, I was disappointed to find today's weather had changed quickly and the area was shrouded in a fog zone. Intermittent views of the G.G. Bridge, San Francisco, and the Marin Headlands gave a tantalizing idea of the great vistas that are possible from atop Hawk Hill on a clear day. |
