Ascent Trip ReportTorreys Peak (Gray)
Grays Peak TH off of Stevens Gulch rd.
East Slope/Kelso Ridge/South Slope
6:10 am Cloudy Skies
This is our first ‘real attempt’ at a Colorado 14er. Gudrun, Torsten and I are headed together toward Torreys and Grays Peaks. The plan is that Kaerstin and I are going to do Torreys via Kelso ridge and then over to Grays. Torsten and Mom are headed to Grays via the east slope and then over toward Torreys. If all goes well we should meet at one of the peaks!
We got to the Kelso ridge Junction where Kaerstin and I headed to the right and Torsten and Gudrun continued straight.
Reached the summit of Torreys. That was the most amazing / scary thing we have ever done! Things were going great until around 13,000’ when it started to snow. Which made everything wet and our hopes of a nice day to go across the knife edge were fading fast as now everything was getting wet.
It took us a while to safely get ‘on’ the edge and then as I started across I asked Kaerstin if she was “OK” and she said “No”. I had to back up and she grabbed my waist and we ‘scouched’ across the knife edge together. Since it was now all wet, getting off was really tricky (and scary). I had to find places where I could be stable and help Kaerstin off. Took us probably 10 minutes just to get past that big white rock on the other end of the knife edge. Once off, we just sat down and had a break down moment. It was incredible!! Quite an experience to share with my 16 year old daughter! Since it was still snowing and it was rather wet, we decided to abandon our plan to summit Grays, after all, with such and experience that we just had, a simple walk over the top of another mountain just really didn’t seem worth it. So we headed back to the car from the saddle between Torreys and Gray.
Safely back at the car. Torsten and Gudrun are already there, Torsten had reached the summit of Grays, but with the snow coming down he wisely headed back down. This is an experience of a lifetime. Incredible!
