Ascent Trip ReportCarter Dome, South Carter We spent the Thanksgiving break in the Gorham / Jackson area. The original Plan was to do the Carters on Thursday and Moriah on Saturday. But the weather is much colder and windier than we expected so we aren’t quite as prepared as we should have been. So we did Moriah on Thursday and today (Saturday) mom, dad and me are going to attempt Carter Dome. We started up the Nineteen Mile brook trail at 8:00 am, it is 3 degrees and “only” a slight wind. Mom stopped at one of the river crossings, it was pretty tricky and we needed to use a lot of trees that were piled up across the river. We got to the Carter Dome trail at 9:00am. Once we got warmed up the hike is going much better than the Moriah hike that had all the wind. We reached the Carter-Moriah trail at 10:30am. There were some real icy spots, but we have are micro-spikes and they are working fine. We chose to go around Mt. Hight, to stay in the woods instead of going out in the open on this rather cold day. We reached Carter Dome at 11:20am. It is beautiful up here, but we couldn’t stay too long because even the slight breeze was registering -8 windchill. We did take some pictures but at 11:30am we headed back down and into the protection of the trees. We were back at the Carter Dome trail at 12:05pm and Dad convinced me that walking the 0.8 miles over to South Carter would save us a couple of miles later when we need to come back to hike Middle Carter. Since it was pretty early in the day and 0.8 miles isn’t all that far I agreed. We were at South Carter at 12:40, the last 200 meters is very steep and very icy so that part slowed us way down. We were headed back down the Carter Dome trail at 1:05pm. It was definitely worth visiting S. Carter. The day is turning out to be much more pleasant than we thought, much warmer than this morning and the trees are protecting us from the light wind. We were at the Nineteen Mile Brook trail at 2:10pm. We met mom at the river crossing, she had been hiking back and forth. We all got back to the car at 3:15pm.
