Ascent Trip ReportMy sister, her husband, my wife and I went camping in the Adirondack for the long weekend of Victoria Day (this is the third weekend of may, Victoria was queen of the British Empire from 1837 to 1901, she was born on May 24, 1819). It was my sister who knew about the spot. We pitched our tents at South Meadow, close to Adirondack Lodge on the Friday night. On Saturday morning we decided to go for a day hike to the summit of Phelps weather and time permitting.
We walked for what seems to be a long time on the dusty old road leading to Marcy Dam. It was warm and sunny. We climbed slowly to the top. My wife and I were not in the best of shape. We ate our lunch at the summit, enjoyed the view and took pictures. Unfortunately, my camera light sensor was not working and the pictures were all black, so this is the only summit I have no picture of. I guess I’ll have to go back up some time.
The return was tough. Rock hoping down on the trail from the summit to Marcy trail junction was tough on my wife’s knees. The old dusty road seemed to go forever before we finally reached our tents. My sister cooked the supper because my wife and I were toasted. I was wearing old army boots and jeans, not the best hiking gear.
On the Sunday, we had recovered enough to hike to Adirondack lodge on a swampy trail and come back by the road.
With today’s hind site are a few comments. I was obviously less in shape at 32 years of age than I am now at 40! This really is one of the easy peaks, not Cascade easy but easy: official well-maintained trail, short distance (14½ kilometres 9 miles) and 640 metres (2100 feet) of elevation gain. We were lucky as I don’t remember wind on the summit, it was sunny and there were just a few small patch of ice on the trail. At that time I had never heard of the 46ers or of peakbagging.
