Ascent Trip Report

This is an easy hike up a dirt road to a summit sporting a selection of antennae, trig pillars and a ruined chapel. Parking is available at the start.

After our Formosinho ascent, we make the two hour drive and park a few metres along a dirt road on the opposite side of the main highway, N38.73109 W7.58957, 480m, SW of the summit. We hike the road, with colourful flowers and singing woodlarks. There are a few forks but following the most obvious road, which is shown accurately on openmtbmap which I have downloaded to my GPS, we are soon among the masts.

The masts are fenced individually and there are no access issues.
The summit itself has a ruined chapel and no less than four trig pillars: a square and a circular at ground level, a third on the roof of the chapel, plus a 10m tall pillar with a pointed top and an 1802 plaque. This last is presumably an intersected station, viewed to but not from, as there would be no way to set up a surveying instrument over it. There is also a lookout tower, perhaps related to the forestry.

The highest natural ground is a small vertical outcrop of rock (N38.73948 W7.58375, 661m GPS) behind (north/east side of) the chapel. The surroundings are pleasant with rolling wooded hills.

We make our way back to the car and drive another 2 hours or so to our next summit, .

Jonathan de Ferranti has the São Gens saddle as 294m at 39:01:57 -7:02:22, hence P359m
