Ascent Trip ReportEmmons Route. Day 1: White River Parking to Glacier Basin, great weather, nice hike camp was set up early. Day 2: Glacier Basin to Emmons Flat just above Camp Schurman, great weather, more elevation gain, camp was set up in mid afternoon.
Day 3: Emmons Flat to summit and back to Emmons Flat with just a daypack. We got up at 1 AM and left at 2 AM. I fell in a crevasse halfway through the night but was held by the rope. I climbed back out with the use of my ice ax and the rope. My two ropemates of 6' 3" & 6' 4" told me that they were not surprised by me not quite making it across since I am only 5' 7". We reached the summit at 11h40. Weather was nice on both the way up and down: sunny with light or no wind. Weather above 4000 m was no so nice. It was fogged in, very windy and ice built up on every exposed surface: helmet, jacket, backpack, glasses, camera lens. We were back at camp shortly after 3 PM.
Day 4: Emmons Flat to White River Parking. We carried food for a fifth day in order to have a possibility of waiting out bad weather one night on Emmons Flat, but the first night turned out to be good. That day was very windy up high, I don't think anyone summited via Emmons. |
