Ascent Trip ReportHiked up from Patterson Gap in Georgia past Grassy Ridge, on an old trail shown on some topos.
That trail shows some switchbacks up from Negro Branch. They are very faint and hard to find. It is also difficult to find the trail at the beginning of where it sidehills around Grassy Ridge, but picks up with a well worn trail at N34.982383 W-83.47899 on the nose toward drive ridge.
Kept going on easy to follow, but not always easy to walk trail past Nichols Gap. Turned right at Carters Gap, behind the shelter and bushwhacked up to the south peak, marked 5043 on my topo.
Coming down, I got sidetracked a little north of that ridge because of easy walking, and ended up following a wash that ended in a rhody trap. Had to go back south then sidehill due west to get out of that. Ended up on the AT about 200 yards east of Carters Gap. Turned back south there on old trail back to Nichols Gap and proceeded to Summit Grassy Ridge from there.
