Ascent Trip Report

With this climb Duane and I became the first two people to complete the list of 58 Ultra-prominent peaks in the Lower 48 states including pre-eruption Mt. St. Helens. As of early 2017 we are still the only two to have completed this list.

Nearly one year before in early September 2007 we were joined by the late great Vernon Garner for our first attempt but got turned around at the Cleveland/Stoney Indian Peaks saddle by a fierce thunderstorm with blowing snow. This photo was taken by Vernon at our turn-around point.

Vernon was unable to join us in 2008 unfortunately, and even though it was one of his bucket list peaks he never knew the joy of the summit of Cleveland as he died in 2011 after a long bout with pancreatic cancer.

The weather in 2008 was much better and we went in mid-August despite the problems reserving campsites in Glacier National Park. We finally decided to camp at the Kootenay Lake campground fully 6,000 feet below the summit, but at least we had two nights there.

This is Duane and me on the summit of Mt. Cleveland, photo was taken by Grant Myers.
