Ascent Trip ReportLooking for a hike to break up a trip returning from Hunter ski resort in NY, we stopped at the Deleware Water Gap off I-80 just before entering PA. It had been raining most of the trip there but the rain subsided about 10 minutes before we arrived and did not start up again the remainder of the day. We left from the parking lot on the Mt Tammany trail and headed up the trail. Very rocky trail with some scrabling required but my 7 year old really enjoyed it. There was a little bit of ice on the trail in spots but nothing we couldn't avoid. About 0.8 miles into the trip we came to a spot on a rocky incline with more ice than we would have liked. My wife felt that while we could get up, it would be difficult coming back down through this spot safely. I looked briefly for options around the ice but came to the conclusion that she was right and we should play it safe and turn around here. Our son really enjoyed this hike, showing us at every opportunity how he was able to get up and over the rocky trail. Perhaps we will return here again during the warmer months to properly summit this mountain. |
