Ascent Trip ReportI did this one in my way back from Black Mt., Ky. and the three closely spaced Va. CHP's (Norton, Wise, and Scott) because I noticed (on my map) it was on my way and probably a drive up. From 58 I took Va. 72 in Coeburn, and then in a few hundred yards left on 646. It winds steadily to the top of the ridge. The topo map shows the benchmark a few feet north of the roadway (just slightly west of the site of an abandoned lookout tower), but there was clearly higher ground a bit ahead. Recent discussion on the CHP discussion board notes that BM's are frequently located by survey crews at spots offering convenient sight lines. I believe this is such a case. I drove up and down the road looking at several bumps, walking into a couple of front yards. I concluded the high spot is in the back yard of a brick house across the road from some large blue water tanks. I drove up the crowded drive, intending to knock on the back door, knowing full well that this is one of those cases where regardless if permission is given, you'll already have touched the spot on the way to the door. Great valley views.
