Ascent Trip Report***Private Outing***
Headed cross-country via HPS Route 1 north up a jeep road, then north up the main easternmost gully, then up the southeastern ridge to Backus Peak. From the summit of Backus we continued NW for a very scenic and fun ridge traverse to Deception Peak and then Russell Peak. Very quick exit via the skree slope on Russell's southern flank (beginning from the saddle SE of Russell) and then out across the gently sloping, soft desert floor through some great Joshua Tree forests to the car we had waiting for us 2.4 miles (off Hwy 178) from our starting point. Got passed up on the way in by Bill Simpson/Jimmy Quan/Bruce Craig's group; we stopped to enjoy a break with them before they continued on; they finished about 3 hours ahead of us.
Mileage and gain include the entire loop, gain is estimated, and time for the whole trip was 9 hours, 50 minutes.
