Ascent Trip Report

As we approached the state park in our car I was quite surprised by the amount of snow and ice, really didn't expect to see much in Alabama, I had really figured it would have melted away already. We decided to climb Cheaha via the Lake trail that ascends from Cheaha lake. It was fairly foggy, so we didn't really get any views, but the trail was a nice workout, quite steep, gaining over 1000 feet in about a mile. The Lake trail itself is blazed with an overzealous quantity of blue paint, so it is nearly impossible to lose the trail unless you are colorblind. After you reach the park via this trail, there is not really any clear trail after that. You just come to a road and parking lot, and the map I had showed a trail, but we couldn't really find it, so we just cross-countried along the path of least resistance towards the high point. Park was pretty much empty, again I guess due to the weather, as some parts of the road to the park still had snow/slush from the polar vortex event of a few days before. The observation tower was deserted but open, so enjoyed that as well, and then descended via the road rather than risk falls going back down the trail we had ascended (slippery and wet).
