Ascent Trip ReportDouble bagged with the South Teton. Same TH (Lupine Meadows), break at the Meadows, continue up south fork of Garnett Canyon, and, as the guidebook says, go until you can't. You'll hit the saddle between the two peaks and there will be a straight drop off with Icefloe Lake right below you, Schoolroom Glacier to the southwest of you, and all of Idaho in front of you.
I took the southern route up the Middle and made it to the foggy, white-out top in about an hour. High exposure ten-foot class II section right before the summit. After being on the top for ten minutes, I heard thunder coming on strong in the distance and it began to snow/hail on me, so I got the fuck off real quick...practically ran and slid down the couloirs all the way to the saddle.
By the time I got back to the saddle, the whole storm had totally blown over and it was literally as beautiful as it could be: no wind, sunny, bluebird skies, not a cloud in sight. So I decided to run up the South. Made it down and back to the saddle in 90 fun minutes of class III scrambling toward the top. Beautiful views all around. Lake Taminah and Lake Snowdrift are just to the south of the summit and are some of the most gorgeous lakes in the park. The Wall is just to their west - a very cool feature. Table Mountain is fun to look at as well, and Buck is quite prominent.
Ran down. Fun day. |
