Ascent Trip Report

I wanted to get one last peak in for the year, funny enough I started and ended my year with this mountain. I wanted to mix things up a little and do something different from the same old peaks I've been cong. So why not try this one again, its a 2.1 mile hike to the summit, the first 1.5 is mostly at a gradual incline (very easy) after that the last 1/2 mile has some hills, they aren't to bad in the summer but in the winter they can be a bit tiring. You eventually come to a sign and you can go right or left up the mountain. The right takes you the standard way up mountain, the left takes you to Mt. Morgan via cliffs. I remember doing the cliffs this past winter so I gave it a shot, you need to climb up two sets of ladders which are attached to one big ladder. Once you get to the top of that one you need to swing your body parallel to the next set of ladders which are on the cliff (very scary) you are suspended 20+ feet in the air, once you are to the other set of ladders it leads you to a cave that brings you to the cliffs... I got to this point and turned around because the snow had covered up the holes in the boulders, one wrong move and your toast. I slowly made my way to the standard trail and made my way to the summit. You follow the trail for .2 miles and it takes you up the backside of the cliffs to a opening where you can see a 270 degree view of little squam, squam, and all the neighboring peaks. Its so beautiful, its worth just the view alone! Best view I've had in the area, hands down. I remember seeing a summit sign, I didn't see it so I had to search for it. It was on the same path I had been on just off a old abandoned looking trail. There was no recent footprints in, but that's the true summit to the right of the trail just before the outlook. Its well worth the hike and a great little mountain, its cold out there huddle warm and take a spare set of clothes :) hike on!
