Ascent Trip ReportWe approached this summit by taking Highway 20 east of Bend. We turned north onto George Millican Road a few mile east of the former Millican Store. On some maps this road appears to be labelled as 6520 but we did not see any signage indicating this. After about 4 miles the roads stops going down and straightens out. We parked slightly north of this at an area designed for people to put on and take off chains. We went under the fence here although you could park 100 yards or so south and go through an opening in the fence. At that spot there is a place where an OHV trail goes under the highway.
Once we were ready we started heading towards the summit as indicated by our GPS. We crossed over several OHV trails and under two sets of power lines before entering the wilderness area. We lost about 100 feet of elevation in about 1.25 miles before making it to the base of the summit. From there it was about another 0.25 miles to the top with about 170 feet of elevation gain. We didn't see any trails up so we just scrambled our way to the top.
There was a small cairn at the top. From here we had great views of the wilderness area and the Cascades from Mount Bachelor north to Mount Hood.
On the way back we ended up a little south of where we parked. We ended up at the spot where the OHV trail goes under the highway. There was a cattle guard here that we crossed the fence line here instead of going under the fence like we did on the way in.
This was a great hike in December of a year with very little snow. We saw a few patches of snow but nothing serious. In the summer time this would be a very hot hike in an area with no water sources. After completing this hike we did a very pleasant hike at the Dry River Gorge Canyon.
