Ascent Trip ReportThis highpoint has been on my bucket list for a long time. I even lived in Georgia for nearly 9 years back in the 60's, but I never even got to see this unique mountain. Today I finally made an ascent and completed, not only conquering Stone Mountain, but the Martin Luther King "I have a dream" List as well. I climbed the west side of the mountain using the standard "Walkup Trail." This route is a little over a mile long and passes over solid, smooth bedrock. It is a very unusual surface to climb on and it gets fairly steep just before the top where the views are excellent in all directions, especially to the west with the skyline of Atlanta clearly visible. It was cold and windy on top and after I located the summit benchmark I hiked back to my car. I was glad to finally reach the warmth of my car where I drove the perimeter road around Stone Mountain. This was a bit of a disappointment, because trees always blocked a good view of the mountain. The museum at the beginning of the Walkup Trail, however, was well worth the time.
