Liberty, Flume and Lincoln
The ride to the trailhead was gorgeous this morning, but as we entered Franconia Notch, it was socked in from low clouds / fog. If all goes well we should be able to hike ‘out of the clouds’. Dad and I are gonna hike up the Liberty Springs trail, Mom is driving down back up to the Falling Waters trail. Our plan is to meet on Lincoln.
Dad and I started up the trail at 9:30 am . We reached Liberty tent site at around 11:3 and about 20 minutes later we were on the Franconia Ridge trail and headed south toward Mt. Liberty.
We reached the summit of Liberty at noon and were greeted with great views in all directions. Cannon Mtn. had a white cap of clouds, but other than that everything was blue. There was 20mph wind at the top, but it wasn’t too bad. We had some snacks and at 12:15pm we set out for peak number 2 for the day, Flume.
The descent off of Liberty is very steep, and that is followed by a very steep 400’ climb back up to the summit of Mt. Flume. We were on top of Flume at 12:55pm and enjoyed the views until 1:10pm when we decided we needed to get going if we were going to get to our 3rd peak of the day, Mt. Lincoln. But first we had to go back up and over Mt. Liberty. The views remain gorgeous and it isn’t as windy as predicted. The hike from Liberty to Lincoln was pretty easy, but when we were about half mile from Haystack, the wind started picking up and the clouds began to roll in. We were on Little Haystack at 3pm. Dad asked if I wanted to continue on to Lincoln or come back another day. When you can see the summit, it is hard not to continue. So headed to our final peak hoping we will beat the weather.
We reached the summit of Lincoln at 3:30pm. I love hiking along the ridge – it was pretty windy at times and our blue sky has faded behind the clouds being blown in, but still this is a great part of the hike.
Dad said the anemometer is reading 30mph winds now. We took a short break and then headed back toward Haystack and then down the Falling Waters trail to meet up with Mom.
We met up with Mom about half way down the trail. Maybe 10 minutes from the parking, it started raining pretty hard. We reached the car at 5:55pm and jus those few short minutes in the rain we were soaked, but feeling really good about today’s hike! |
