Ascent Trip ReportFor the first portion of this trip, please see my report under Towne Benchmark.
From the saddle, we immediately began heading up a fairly gentle ridge toward a series of small peaklets. One of these is listed here in peakbagger (provisionally) but is so minor I opted not to include it as a separate peak. The top of the ridge is mostly covered in a minor rocky outcrop, but is easily bypassed to either side, or climbed. The ridgeline began to veer north, and some debate ensued over which of the two remaining high points on our route was actually Panamint Butte. One spot to our left (west) seemed higher, and some were convinced by their GPS readings that it was the actual peak. Others opted for the one we were sort of on course for (north). A decision was made to head north, then west to the first peak. But Jim and I soon agreed the peak to the west wasn't the correct one, and convinced everyone to head for the north peak, which turned out to be the correct one.
More photos, snacks, and register signings at the summit.
For the trip back to Towne Benchmark, we decided to try a line further to the north that seemed to ascend a more gradual, and hopefully more solid, slope. We hit the valley bottom at a point more to the north and got ready to head up the slope.
For the last portion of this trip, please see my report under Towne Benchmark (second instance, same date). GPS track shown is for the entire outing.
