Ascent Trip Report

Trip with Nate for SOTA.

Parked at Paso Picacho Campgrounds and decided to take the Azalea Glen Trail towards the spring. Even though I've hiked this peak before, we were surprised to see construction barriers on what should have been the trail. So we bypased and hiked along what seemed to be a bulldozed track heading towards Middle Peak. At one point we joined up with a mountain bike trail and a horse trail..... could still see hiking shoe prints and wasn't concerned about being lost. VERY apparent where the trail had been clear cut by the construction equipment. After some rolling terrain we joined up with a gravel road and after 1/2 mile were at the Spring. Looked briefly for the use trail to middle and even though we found what was the path - it was WAY too overgrown for us to want to hike it - so we headed back towards the Lookout Road. Lots of construction blocks on the trail - so we took a much longer route (trip distance was 10 miles instead of the usual 6) - but it was a lovely day, so it didn't matter. Made the top in good time on the road and headed down to expore the Japacha Peak. Got half way to Japaha and my Other Half decieded that he wanted a beer at Alpine Beer Co instead of the peak and was DONE hiking- so we turned about half-way between Cuyamaca and Japacha. Went down the road, made great time, and had some awesome beer at Alpine. Nice day in the mountains!
