Ascent Trip ReportFrom Ubehebe Crater road in Death Valley, Kelley Laxamana and I drove about 10.5 miles south on the Racetrack road looking for the turnout mentioned in the DPS guide. Not finding a good place to park the truck, we back tracked 0.8 miles to a turn out that had room for about 3 cars and was located at an elevation of 4,659’. Kelley and I got our packs ready and were hiking towards the peak at 7:05 am. As we approached the base of the mountain, we stayed on the north side of a prominate drainage course until we located a duct and the beginnings of a use trail that started up the ridge, elevation 5,465’. A very good use trail went up the ridge, and at about 7,000’in elevation the use trail dropped down on the south side of the ridge to bypassed some rocky outcrops. The use trail stayed on the south side of the ridge and eventually crossed to the north side of the ridge at elevation 7,566’. The use trail rejoined the ridge at 8,043’ just below a peaklet on the ridge. Kelley and I reached a major duct at 8,177’in elevation, where we made our way east and up to cross over the ridge at 8,575’, just a little higher than the 8,500’ elevation mentioned in the guide. Kelley and I dropped down into a wash, which we followed to an 8,660’ saddle located just west of the summit. From the saddle, we headed off east and climbed the last 300’ to reach the summit at 12:00 pm. Kelley and I left the summit at 12:30 pm, following our assent route back to the truck, where we arrived at 3:30 pm.
