Ascent Trip Report

I visited DuPont State Forest to complete two of the hikes on the White Squirrel Challenge, sponsored by the Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy. Mine Mountain was just a half mile off the trail to Bridal Veil Falls, so I climbed it on the way back.

DuPont may be the most popular outdoors destination in the Blue Ridge, with over 80 miles of trails open to hiking, biking, and horseback riding. There are four major waterfalls along the Little River. The 10,500-acre forest was formerly a secluded manufacturing facility with its own airport, and it is a triumph of conservation efforts. It's got everything but solitude.

I hiked the 2.2 miles from the Fawn Lake trailhead on Reasonover Road to Bridal Veils Falls, which is one of the eight destinations on the White Squirrel list. It's a fairly level hike along gravel roads, crossing the abandoned airstrip along the way. On the return, I checked my GPS and found Mine Mountain nearby, so I made a side trip. From Conservation Road, I took the Scarlet Oak trail, cutting across to the Fawn Lake road. Turn left and then take a quick right onto the Mine Mountain trail. Continue a half-mile up this trail. There are two knobs atop Mine Mountain, and the western one is higher. It's about 100 yards off the trail.

Mine Mountain is probably the second highest summit in the DuPont State Forest. On the USGS quad (with 40-foot contours), Mine Mountain and Cedar Rock both top out in the 3080 contour. However, the NCFS map has 20-foot contours, and it shows Mine at 3080 and Cedar at 3060. The highest is Stone Mountain at 3600.
