Ascent Trip Report

After crossing the Kintai Bridge and walking through Kikko Park, I took the ropeway toward Iwakuni Castle. The summit of Yokoyama is located in the courtyard of this castle, which is actually a concrete reproduction of a long-destroyed hill fort that was built in the Warring States Period (late 16th-early 17th century).

Trails are well-maintained -- the top of this mountain is somewhat flattened due to the construction of the castle, so finding the natural summit is an academic endeavor at best. It's best to just stroll the grounds and enjoy the view of Kintai Bridge and the city of Iwakuni beyond.

There is a walkable, and well-maintained trail from the far west end of Kikko Park to the castle, if you want to make more of a challenge out of this -- and then take the steps to the top of the castle for the "manmade summit" experience.
