Ascent Trip Report

Cactus-to-Clouds as part of the San Jacinto Hiking Club.

Met at 3:50 am in the PS Art Museum parking lot and figured out which group would be the fastest and decided to stick with them - there seemed to be lots of varying speeds and some groups only wanted to go to the tram station vs going all the way to the peak.

Started hiking right at 4:04 am and after a few turn-arounds and wrong ways, we made good time. Lots of trails - TONS of trails.... pretty confusing. Happy I was with a group. Even then, we still got off course a few times when it was dark - so we always looked for a faint trail or the white dots on a rock.... always found them. Another group came up behind Danny - Tina, Dan, and a few others and we all pretty much stuck together. There was one point when Tina's group took a break and Danny said that he was going to go on - so Kelly and I stuck with him. After 20 or 30 minutes we could see them below us making good time on the way up. At Flat Rock, Danny said that he was going to take a break, but that the trail was very straightforward - I remembered it from my time here last year.... So Kelly and I stuck together and pressed on. We figured that he or the fast-paced Tina group would catch us.... But we made steady time and soon crested the saddle into San Jacinto State Park - at exactly 9:08 am. Took us a total of 5:04 to make it up Skyline Trail - which was awesome! I think I could have gone faster had I not waited for Kelly at a few junctions and/or pushed the pace earlier on. Otherwise, felt great! WE took a 5-min break to grab some nutrition and text our significant others that we were okay, and made good time of heading up to the peak. Stopped by the ranger station and grabbed our permit for the peak... Passed one guy (Sid?) who was one of the two ahead of us on the trail - he tried to keep up, but we lost him before Wellman's Divide. Made good time and were on the peak by 11:15. Enjoyed the views and celebrated the success and descend at a steady rate. Left the peak around 11:30 after chatting with a few hearty others who were up there. GREAT views - and not windy yet! Threw on my gloves and jacket, though. Made good time down and just chatted away, enjoying the trail. Back at the Tram Station around 1:15 - hardest part was walking up the final ramp. Yikes! Total hike time to the top of the ramp was 9:14..... Felt GREAT and very positive about this! Enjoyed a beer, bathroom break and took the tram down. Palm Springs was HOT, scortching..... so it was nice to have a cooler in the car! Took the 1:45 tram down, and was at the car by 2:15...heading back to San Diego by 2:30. GREAT day!

Overall great day - liked being able to push the pace on this trail... am still interested in going faster, if possible - but today I felt great and really enjoyed stretching it out. Very fun to find a hiking partner - Kelly was AWESOME.... former ultra trail runner and racer who at 52 was an inspiration and made the journey such a wonderful experience. Neat to see it through her eyes, as this was her first time on this route. Yeah! Great day!
