Ascent Trip Report

Gary Gibson and I headed up the Clear Creek Trail hoping to make it up Tolby Peak. The Clear Creek trail crisscrosses the stream passing impressive water falls. It begins ascending the slope toward Tolby around 1.9 mi. After a few hundred yards it peters out and the bushwhack begins. Snow, ice, and muddy slopes where snow had melted made what would be a very steep bushwhack under ideal conditions much more difficult. I found it hard to get reliable footing much of the way up with lots of slipping and sliding over ice covered rocks and fallen trees , and I really didn't feel safe. Coming down was even more frightening with some ass sliding and lots of stumbling. I expect my climbing parter Gary would have ventured higher despite these problems, but I didn't feel comfortable doing so. Maybe try it again next summer in warmer and drier weather.
