Ascent Trip ReportWas originally going to be ECBO - Etiwanda-Cucamonga-Bighorn-Ontario via Icehouse Canyon, but the early winter storm dropped snow down the the 6K foot level, so we adjusted our plans.
Set out from Icehouse Canyon TH with John and made a quick 1:20 ascent of Icehouse Canyon to the saddle. Started walking through consistent snow around the 2 mile marker - and just took our time to navigate through the icey bits. Saw two hikers on the way down, both of whom reported hitting Timber and then turning back. At Icehouse Saddle, it was clear that the snow was 4-5 inches deep, and there hadn't been any foot traffic through the Cucamonga Wilderness at all. We had a map of the area, but no GPS tracks and NO winter/snow gear that would have made this a safe hike. Added onto our challenges was the thin layer of icy crust/sheen on the top of the snow from the melting and re-freezing.... so we decided to heed the advice of one of the hikers we met, and just head over to Timber. Had fun walking through the snow and the path was fairly easy to follow without the exposure that we would have gotten in the Cucamonga area. Nice time at the summit and quick hike down the canyon back to the car. Total hiking distance was approx 10 miles and we were out for 3:30 or so total time. Quick day in the mountains, but fun to play in the snow!
