Ascent Trip ReportAfter a failed attempt in 2011 due to not being able to drive up into Ten Cent Meadows (too steep/loose for the 2WD car), I decided to take a different approach this time.
We parked about 3 miles up Arizona Creek 'road' at a triangle intersection (42.135X-118.635, 5380') and rode mountain bikes along the road up to the base of the peak (42.097X-118.691, 7080'). From there we scrambled almost due west, up the slope to an obvious break just south of an escarpment before heading north to the summit block. Rather than dropping down to the west to gain the summit without climbing, we opted to climb up via an obvious breach on the south wall. We ascended up the right (east) side of the breach via a route at or above 5.0. The rock is pretty decent, so it was a quick and simple climb.
We then rambled up to the summit and took some photos before beginning the return. We descend via the left (west) side of the breach. I'd recommend scoping out our route in reverse, as it seems like it'd be easier going up the left (more vertical, but big holds) and down the right (more counter-pressure steps, but easier to see everything while down-climbing). We quickly descended to the bikes after that and set off zooming back down to the car after conquering the slope at the base of the main Pueblo Mtn.
We saw a couple of goats on the top of the ridge, and a herd (8?) of Bighorn Sheep just below it on the ascent. This is the same place I nearly stumbled over a cougar two years prior. We also saw a big white truck enter Ten Cent Meadows from the north and exit via our route out.
