Ascent Trip Report

During a break in Ecology class my friend asked me when we were going to hike up Elbert. Half joking I replied that we are going after class. After thinking about it for a minute and looking at the weather we realized that there is no reason why we couldn't hike Elbert after class. It was pretty late in the day but we would just bring our headlamps. I had never done the North East ridge before so we decided to do that route. We were at the TH at about 4pm. There was some snow on the ground but it was not too cold, the temp was perfect. We made good time to treeline and then continued to motor up the slopes. We got beautiful views as the sun started to go down and we gained altitude. We could see alpine glow on all the peaks surrounding us and after a few false summits we were able to catch the end of sunset on the summit. It was significantly colder and windier on the summit so we layered up and took some pictures. We each called our families because it is not very often that you have cell service on top of a mountain. After a frozen snickers bar we descended back to the TH with headlamps. We basically had the entire mountain to ourselves with the exception of a few people that we saw below treeline on the way out. It was a gloriously beautiful summit and I was very happy to have done it.
